Good morning my name is Victoria young I'm the director of reading writing and social studies assessments for TE a today I want to talk to you a little bit about the continuum for writing specifically for 4 & 7 expository writing this is a chart that most likely you've seen a lot these are statewide scores there are some scores for expository writing for 2014 and they're displayed on the 2 through 8 scale but what I want to talk to you about is sort of thinking about student writing in a different way thinking about the distribution of scores on a continuum what I'd like to do today is really focus on the distinctions between some scores now when we talk about the distinctions between some scores what we're really talking about is the edges of each score point in which students actually transition from one score point to another so basically what you would be talking about for instance with the low end of the score scale you'd be talking about the very top of very limited I know that sounds odd but that's what it is it's sort of the high end a very limited you're talking about kids that are between the score points that are actually transitioning from very limited to basic and then you're talking about the low basic kids kids that have transitioned into getting a four which is a two two on star but they are just transitioned in that same way you can think about the transition between score point two and score point three which would be a sum score for a sum score of six in the same way so kids that are high basic between basic and satisfactory and satisfactory would comprise this group of kids and then at the high end you've got kids that are high satisfactory almost accomplished but not quite you've got kids between satisfactory and accomplished and then you've got kids that are accomplished but they're low accomplished in other words they've just transitioned to a score of four four or they're low eights now this is what the scoring continuum looks like and I think one thing that's really important to understand is where kids are where every kid is on the scoring continuum you know one of the reasons we went to the some scoring is we wanted to give you more precise information about where kids were because remember that within each score point there's a lot of room and what that means is that if you have students let's say they're a basic writer and both readers give a student a two they would get us some score of four some of those kids could be barely into score point four and some of those kids could be almost out of score point four like a thumb score those two writers would be on different parts of the continuum so if you look at the low four kids they would be just to the right of the bottom orange arrow and the high some score kids of four would be just to the left of the orange arrow below the five those kids are very different kinds of writers there's a lot of space in every score point so when you think about students you really have...
